James Ogilvie started his E.R. rotation determined to become the most impressive med student in the department.
Unfortunately, Victoria Javadi already claimed his spot.
She’s smarter than him, faster than him, better with patients than him, and somehow still has time to pine after a curly-haired nurse who clearly doesn’t deserve her.
Meanwhile, James is stuck memorizing the color rotation of her scrunchies and stalking her tiktok.
Now, their shifts consist of chest tubes, escalating bets, near-synchronized diagnoses, and bickering so intense that a concussed patient assumes they’re married.
Which would be less of a problem if James wasn’t starting to wish they were.

"Ogilvie was looking at her through the mirror - the degree of separation somewhat comforting - with his head slightly to one side and his usual sneer wiped off his face, replaced by a look of concern. He looked a little like the large dogs with floppy ears that would barrel into her in the park as a child. They had scared her then, before she realised the sharp teeth and powerful muscles distracted her from the wagging tail and the slobbering tongue."

Back in the ED for her very last rotation before residency finalization, Victoria Javadi is gunning for the single residency spot -- she's doing it all right, everyone loves her, she's smart, charismatic, and kind.
There is just one little problem: James Ogilvie, the asshole MS4 she met six months ago on the 4th of July, also wants that spot. Bad.
But does he want it as badly as he wants her?

Unfortunately, to Victoria’s terrible luck, James Ogilvie was present.
(“I can’t fucking stand you.” his whispers in her ear, the last syllable coming out as a whimper as he struggles to keep control.)
And, unfortunately, Victoria Javadi, on the night of her 21st birthday, lost her virginity to James Ogilvie.
She wishes she could brag to Trinity and Dennis, tell them that it was terrible, tell them that she thinks that sex isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. She wants to say that he sucked, that she is some sort of sex connoisseur that would know.
The most unfortunate thing of all, however, was that she loved it.
