    “Why are you looking at skateboards?” asks Luke.

    “Maybe Kronos wants us to get a skateboard.”

    Luke presses a hand on the top of Percy’s head and physically turns him away from the window display.

    “Does Kronos want us to get a skateboard,” he says.

    “…No.”


    Luke wants to know what the hell Percy thinks he’s doing. Percy wants Luke to trip and fall over the side of the yacht. They are, as always, at an impasse.

    “None of this is fair,” Percy said under his breath, then rolled his eyes because now in addition to being newly single, he was also becoming one of the people who talked to themselves on the subway.

    “Things usually aren’t,” a chipper voice sounded from beside him.

    Percy startled, nearly falling out of his seat in his attempt to rise to a defensive stance. The guy sitting two seats away was smiling at him with earnest brown eyes, and didn’t seem at all surprised that Percy had jumped to his feet. Percy eyed him wearily, noticing the floppy brown hair and what looked like some sort of science pun on his t-shirt under his coat. He didn’t look like a monster yet, but he also didn’t look like a god.
