Summary
Mark’s existence had always seemed to him a poorly finished draft, a succession of disguised errors. When Sebastian appears, like a vast and undeserved kindness, he becomes, by degrees, the most painful way for Mark to confront himself and everything he lacked.
In the presence of such solar affection, Mark realizes that perhaps love is the leaden weight destined to drag him to the bottom and, at last, force him to open his eyes.

Summary
Since Qatar, he hasn’t been able to shake the feeling of being perpetually on edge, a restless, roiling thing at the very bottom of his stomach, as if something in his blood has started seething and it’s now getting out of control.
At last, he allows himself to glance at Luca, but he doesn’t really like what he sees: his aura of monklike zen, that misplaced calm that makes Marc feel like he’s being mocked, only not openly.
“Don’t look at me like that,” he says, biting his tongue on far meaner words, which taste acrid when he forces himself to swallow them, fighting not to come off as pathologically paranoid.
Isn’t it another thing you learned from Valentino? A malicious voice in the back of his head supplies, almost knocking him out of balance. Luca tilts his head, his lips slightly curled, and for a moment Marc feels like he’s stuck on the same movie again and again, one he has seen before, around a decade ago.
“Like what?” Luca finally asks, his voice nudging Marc out of his thoughts.
“With pity.”Longing for Valentino and in the mood for self-flagellation, Marc goes looking for some palliative fucking from the only person that can give him the illusion of the real thing.
