The third son’s heart raced as Penelope's sweet words washed over him, her innocent gratitude awakening a sudden, fierce willingness to push modesty to the side and accept a reward. In his alcohol-fueled bravado, he found himself thinking of medieval maidens rewarding their gallant knights with tokens of affection.
As the music faded away, Colin made a split-second decision. He took Penelope's hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.
