Summary

Summary
Ryland Grace isn’t thrilled that, in his semester abroad in Oxford, he has to room with Jonathan “Jon” Sims. When they meet Gerard Keay and Ryland bullies Jon into being friends with him, things get even more complicated.
As his two new friends grow closer and begin to leave him out of things, he finds a mysterious book. This book, belonging to “The Library of Jurgen Leitner”, tells a strange tale of microbes eating the sun and intelligent life on a planet orbiting 40 Eridani A. Once he reads it, he begins sharing dreams with an alien he names Rocky. Along with the dreams, he begins to get seemingly magical powers.
He doesn’t understand why Gerard is less than thrilled about this development.

After Rocky enters a strange cave, he begins speaking to a leaky, squishy alien while he sleeps. What’s much worse is when he begins turning into a leaky, squishy blob himself- while still on Erid. Just when his home planet threatens to kill his changing body, he finds himself on Earth. Confused and alone.Now him and his Fear-ordained soulmate, Grace, have to figure out how to get him home to his mate while also dealing with Grace’s developing powers and the Vast’s increasing demands.

In this universe, Rocky offers to help create a food Ryland can eat during their journey on the Hail Mary together by hybridizing Ryland's DNA with food from his planet. As a result, Ryland begins taking on... different traits. Traits that make it possible for him and Rocky (and eventually, Adrian) to get closer than any of them ever thought they would be while the three of them start a life together on Erid.

Summary
Grace did, at some point, learn more about Eridian reproduction systems beyond the brief overview Rocky gave him when they first met. Eridians used to bury their eggs to improve the success of healthy hatchlings. Lower in the ground in its cave systems, Erid’s temperature decreases to a cool 130-150 degrees Fahrenheit. However, with modern technology, Eridians can improve the life expectancy of their young even further by securing the eggs inside incubation machines that cool them down to 95-100 degrees Fahrenheit.
It was super interesting to learn about all of this, and of course he chimed in, “that’s basically my temperature, you know?” But the scientist he was talking to already knew this. They got excited that Grace made the connection anyway.
"Yes, you would be a perfect incubator for Eridian eggs. There wouldn’t be any instinctual fear about predators stealing the eggs, if they were safe inside you."
Huh?
