Summary
-Who is a god, before he is worshiped?-
Sejanus knelt next to his parents, a child of only six already feeling unwelcome in the strange temple. His father claimed this was now their homeland, that accepting their new home came with such adjustments.
A small boy his age is brought up to the altar, an elder woman and a barely older girl by his side. He trembles, putting his hands on the cool stone.
A light breaks through the ceiling, causing priests to gasp, clambering towards the boy as they talk over themselves.
Sejanus watches with rapt attention. Bright blue eyes meeting for his only for a moment as the boy stands under a pillar of light breaking through the solid roof of the temple.
He knows, somehow, something has happened. It will be explained later as a miracle. The gods choosing one of their own from such a young boy. Destined to grow into greatness beyond mortal understanding.
Sejanus remembers the way that young child trembled. Innocent and all too human. Terrified as he turned back to his family. Adults crowding him in their own excitement uncaring for the child’s emotion.
He was not a god.
