Naruto is just done. He's so done with picking up the pieces of the mask he's always worn to protect himself. Every time he thinks it's safe to take it off, he's instead picking up the pieces to remake it.
Almost Three years since the war, and Naruto is done picking up the pieces. He's tired of giving pieces of himself for everyone.
It's time he starts thinking about himself and who he is and who he wants to be. It's time for the blonde to finally seek his own happiness.
And if the Council of elders thinks they can keep him from getting the Hokage's hat? They have another thing coming.
Naruto may not be the oblivious idiot that everyone thinks he is, but he's still the same determined and stubborn headed Blonde they adore. He will NOT give up his dreams.
He'll just have to go the long way. If he furthers his own skills in the process, who's to stop him?

Summary
Naruto had plans—pined in red string in his mind, connecting each path he'd ever wanted to take and could with ease or difficulties. He'd looked through them many times, taking a few down and shelving them to collect dust, or adding more to them.
Simply, Naruto could never see himself as a kage when there's only loss present in his veins. He took the responsibility of leading for his people, so that they would return home as one and it's one thing he dreams most of—he dreams of home and feels the yearning of the seals.
After the end, Naruto finds Uzushiogakure, his clan's home. In the Uzumaki sealed chambers, he lies and hopes as his eyes close that this is it—but it never is that easy when it comes to him.
(Or, a time-travel fix-it because I decided it's time for a feel-good era which has good endings.)
