I felt my heart shatter into a thousand pieces. Bruce gave him a kiss, but Clark felt his lips were cold—a pang of anguish that left him breathless.
"Don't say that. You aren't going to die," his voice broke, the words coming out in a pleading whisper. "I promise you're going to be okay, but please, don't close your eyes."
He pulled him tighter against his chest and began to return to Earth as if his embrace could bring him back to life, as if his love were enough to save him. But Bruce, with a sweetness that tore at his soul, gave a slight shake of his head. His thumb brushed Clark's cheek in one last attempt at comfort; his lips parted to say something more, but the sound never came.
