"Sorry for what happened out there," he tips his head in the direction of the rink, but Hunter's tone is far from apologetic. "Nothing personal, you know?"
"Yeah," Shane bobs his head like an idiot, desperate for their interaction to end. "Nothing personal." There is a beat of agonizing silence. Hunter eyes him up and down, dismissive and assessing in turn.
"I'm fine," he replies stiffly, his shoulders locking up tight without his permission. Hunter smiles, satisfied. Shane has passed some test, though for what purpose it served, he couldn't guess.
"Let me buy you a drink," Hunter offers, clapping him on the shoulder, his touch heavy as lead, hot as a dying star crashing through the heavens.
