Summary
Ever since Ambrosius was young, he's had expectations and responsibilities stacked upon him, being a direct descendant of Gloreth and all.
He was taught that love is conditional, a privilege given to him when he proved he was worthy of it, even when proving his worth meant wearing himself to the bone.Ballister's love isn't like that. It's infinite, unconditional.
A little too unconditional, in his opinion. He's so quick to forgive Ambrosius for things he hasn't earned forgiveness for, ways he's hurt Bal both physically and otherwise that should not be brushed aside so easily.
So he's started taking matters into his own hands.Or: Ambrosius feels guilty and deals with it in an unhealthy and potentially life-threatening way. Ballister finds him doing this.

There’s a sniffle. “Alex.”
Alex’s shoulders go taut with tension; he may not have heard from him in a year and had only seen him in tabloids and the occasional interview or ribbon cutting on a shitty stream that Alex had no business being on, but he hasn’t forgotten Henry’s tells. He hasn’t forgotten the edge to his voice on his dark days; the way it clings to the very molecules of air surrounding him, as if it wishes to seep into every ounce of air he dares breathe in.
Alex swallows, sets his highlighter down. “Henry,” he says carefully, “what’s going on?”

In which Ballister does not suck at sneaking, does not get arrested, and they actually get to have a proper conversation.
“You’re wearing my hoodie,” he hears himself say, in a soft trembling voice, before his mind catches up with his mouth.
“Uh, I mean-”
Ambrosius blinks, then ducks his head, face flushing.
“It..still smells like you,” he murmurs guiltily, like the admission is a confession, and the act is a crime.
Perhaps it is, given the manhunt—such a choice betrays his heart, and his heart should be allegiant to the Institute, should be hardened and dressed in shining armour, not the soft lingering possessions of a criminal.
It had not deterred him anyway.
Ballister emits a strangled choke, his heart pounding, face warm. He should have known he would love him, still.
