Erwin gestures to the empty space where his right arm is supposed to be, the sleeve of his shirt fluttering in the wind. "Should you choose to stay, you will spend the rest of your days with a ruined, bitter man. You are deserving of far greater happiness, and with this, I shall allow you this final opportunity to take your leave."
His words are vinegar on his tongue, and his heart thrashes wildly in the expanse of his chest. He looks at you and tries to find any filament of relief in your eyes, but he does not. This tortures him.
"You are suggesting I seek happiness elsewhere, sir," you begin, and he holds his breath, clutching at every word that's released from your lips. "Yet had it not crossed your mind that I am happy here? That I am happy with you?"

"Is that why you're here, little lamb?" Erwin asks through the confessional screen, and you suck in some air at that pet name. You've grown quite fond of it. "Is that why you've come in the middle of the night? To be told what to do, what to say, what to think?"
You say nothing. Darkness before you swirls, churns, and pulsates so thickly that you feel you can leap into it. Inside the confession booth, you can still hear the rain pelting outside, the striking beats of your heart. You can hear your unsteady breaths. You can hear him.
After many beats of silence, his voice croaks through the air. A broken, shattered command; a plea.
"Kneel for me, then."
After your divorce, you move back home to heal and to help your family. It's strange, though, that Father Erwin, the local priest, looks at you as if he's seen God Himself, and you can't help but seek salvation through him.

Merely by coincidence, Erwin, your father's former friend had crossed paths with you again after nearly a decade. When people theorized about the world ending, they imagined some huge catastrophic event that wiped out all humankind in one go. Nuclear warfare, maybe. Giant meteors. Or, your personal favorite: a global pandemic. People envisioned the end of the world to be sudden and unpredictable, because no one could fathom seeing it coming and not stopping it. But then again, when a death is slow, you always think you have more time.
You navigate the metropolis of survival with only yourself to hold onto—but the problem is, your grip isn’t very strong. Erwin and Levi help illuminate this path that you all walk together, but in the end, inner battles are fought alone.
After a slow death, rebirth is even slower.
