    Ponyboy Cade had never had his cuts taken care of before; sometimes his mom would patch him up when Dad hurts him too much, but he’s usually unconscious when that happens, and she’s never there when he wakes up. So it was an odd experience, having Mrs. Curtis disinfect and put a band-aid over his knee with gentle hands. He had never been treated gently before, and when he started thinking about it, his eyes stung, so he decided to not think about it any more.
