His breath fanned across Michael’s face while the tense silence stretched on for seconds too many. Michael fought the instinct to lean back.

Afton's gravelly voice grated through the silence. He licked his lips, grin widening with each passing moment.
"Am one...."
Michael steeled his nerves when Afton placed a firm hand on his shoulder, squeezing hard as he leaned into his son's ear.

This was typically the part where Rumi would be expected to introduce herself, but she didn't seem to give a flying fuck about what was expected of her if the way she still just stared even as Celine cleared her throat pointedly said anything.

Rumi squinted between them and the bag. "Why."
"Because as much as you don't seem to like us, we like you just fine."

"Well, come on. Aren't you going to bite somebody with those big sharp teeth of yours?" Mira prompted again with a raised brow, shaking Zoey's arm slightly, as if genuinely trying to entice Rumi to take a bite.
Instead of taking the proffered bait, Rumi turned her head away with a strong air of ‘well now I don't want to.'
"Thought so." Mira drawled, unimpressed. "Now how about you let us help you inside?"

Summary
Jinx knew Caitlyn Kiramman was smart, and also incredibly rich. So her, and anyone else with a brain, expected her to go to a prestigious Ivy League University. She would meet some nice—but incredibly boring—loser, and fall in love. Maybe they’d get married her senior year and start a family a couple years later. They’d live in some big house with too many kids, a boring marriage, and a ugly dog.
And Jinx would never get to see her again.
So, when Jinx walked into her dorm to meet her new roommate, and came face to face with none other than Caitlyn Kiramman.

“Yeah, we thought we lost you for a sec there.” This voice, a little higher, but no less deadly.
Not one, but two strangers.
“Can’t you see you’re interrupting something?” the guy snapped at them.
“Can’t you see,” the first voice mocked, “she’s not yours?”

Mira looked up to see his face— "Oh!" For the second time tonight, Mira was startled to see a young woman's face. The demon king wasn't a king at all. She was a demon queen. Her eyes were a soft brown, though when she stepped into the light, they reflected with a golden hue. The tiger striped patterns were on her face and neck too. She wasn't human, that was for certain.
