Summary
Jim falls asleep—real sleep, the kind he’ll come back from within hours and not days, not weeks—between one word and the next. His breathing slows, his eyes close, his mouth goes slack and hangs slightly open. Leonard studies his face and feels his heart go heavy with unbridled feeling (a fierce protective longing that snuck up on his all those years ago, his fondness for Jim fermenting into something richer, something wild and unbreakable that will probably carry Leonard to his grave one day). He smooths Jim’s unruly hair with a light sweep of his fingers, pulls a chair closer to the side of the bed without any attempt at a pretext and takes his seat. It isn’t a vigil anymore, not now that Jim’s truly come back.

Leonard hadn’t meant to get drunk and text some genius kid about his feelings for a certain blond, blue-eyed wonder of a man. His life was already pathetic enough as it was, goddamn it.
What he hadn't meant to do at all was to send that text to the wrong person.The sad truth was that Jim didn’t belong to him, or to anyone else. His best friend had made it clear eons ago that he was a one-night-stand type of guy who would only ever commit to a serious relationship with the Enterprise as its captain. And Leonard was many things, but he wasn't capable of warp, wasn’t wild enough, gorgeous enough or interesting enough to make one Jim Tiberius Kirk fall for him.
So here he was, getting drunk and brooding.

At this stage of the game, Leonard is too exhausted to really care what he could win, and regretting his participation more with every moment that passes.
Through sheer force of will, he picks himself up for the last guy of the day. He stands tall, smiles and waves, as the poor sap is brought out, all flirtatious winks and a beaming smile and holy shit, those have to be contacts, don’t they? Nobody’s eyes are really that blue.
