I know that goodness exists because Peeta is good.
I also know that darkness exists because there is night, that evil exists because its stench clings to my pores, that pain exists because it vibrates deep in my bones.
And yet... sometimes I do not know if I exist. I slip in and out of awareness, a dizzying carousel of real and not real and real and not real. Guilt numbs my senses; shame wraps like a vice around my ankles and threatens to pull me under. The nightmares start to creep out of my sleep and make shadows in the corners of my very open eyes.
Before I can succumb to complete numbness, I find solace in Haymitch. He soothes the ache in my belly while lighting my skin aflame.
