She didn't have time to process it the next morning because instead of being awoken to a bird song, the sound of a car engine snapped her out of dreamland."

It was just a one night stand, wasn't it? The night was frantic and foolish. Something that could be forgotten between the two people whose relationship was so complex it could no longer be labelled 'Just Friends.' The issue was, it was quite challenging or Joyce to forget something so memorable.

Summary

Summary
Chrissy Carpenter, Hopper's old flame from high school that he hasn't seen in years, is about to embark on her third marriage, this one to a rich business mogul from Chicago that she's definitely marrying for the money. When Joyce and Hopper both receive invitations to the quaint country destination wedding, their first instinct is to decline, but the advertised open bar, a chance for a much-deserved weekend getaway on someone else's dollar, and the jocular opportunity to judge their old classmates from afar prove to be too tempting, and they make the decision to attend together.
It's not exactly a date, but it quickly begins to feel like one, and as they dance around the increasingly foggy boundaries of their relationship, all while taking advantage of the expensive amenities of the luxurious cottage resort, the two begin to uncover a sordid scandal plaguing the bridal party they feel inclined to investigate. But mystery isn't all they unearth at this class reunion in disguise, as Hopper comes to the dreadful conclusion Chrissy Carpenter isn't the only ex of his parading around. If that doesn't kill him, having to make conversation with Ted Wheeler for an entire weekend just might.

The scraping of a chair against floorboards. The shuffling of feet. The jostling of keys.
“Joyce?” His voice is low, concerned. She hears his office door swing open. “What’s wrong? Where are you?”
“I did something, Jim,” she whimpers, bringing the receiver closer to her mouth. “Something bad.”
Or, Joyce kills Lonnie and Hopper isn't about to let her go down for it.
