“Years ago,” Qifrey says suddenly, “And you won’t remember this, you made me make you a promise. And I’ve kept it, until now.” As he talks, Qifrey fidgets with his hat. He turns it around and around in his hands, then unhooks the ribbon from the point.
“Hey—”
Olruggio steps forward as if to stop him, but it’s done. Qifrey twists the ribbon in his hand, crumpling it.
“That’s—”
“Your ribbon. And my promise. I’ve worn them both for years. For you. And for myself. But Olly—I asked you here because I can’t do it anymore.”

Qifrey had never even considered taking on apprentices, at first. But navigating a life outside of the Great Hall forces him to consider what he wants to do with the time he has left.

You know how YuGiOh is a lot of card games with a little magic thrown into the mix? What if it was a lot of magic with only the occasional card game? That’s the idea we’re playing with here. No filler arcs. Minimal duels. Lots of character development, magic, and boys being cute as they save the world and maybe fall in love along the way. Literally no scene will play out as it did in the original show and we’re going to be deviating from the initial plot almost right out of the gate. The rare bits of content that do match the original narrative will be gone over as quickly as possible.
And while we're at it, let's fix the Egyptology, too.
