Ever since their return to Hawkins in the previous spring, Will has kept a careful distance from Mike, keeping himself busy with school clubs to avoid spending time with Mike one on one - because every time they're in a room together, he finds himself on the verge of saying things he shouldn't, asking questions he knows are only going to hurt him. But then a snowstorm wreaks havoc in Hawkins, trapping him and Mike in the Wheeler house while the rest of the family are gone. And now Will has no choice but to confront everything he has tried so hard to ignore.

They reached the top platform, wind screaming ash and spores around them. Mike’s beanie was a tragedy. Will’s face was already tight with pre battle anxiety and years of repressed feelings.
“Will,” Mike panted, grabbing his arm. “Before we probably die up here…I need to say this.”
Will’s heart did the hopeful cartwheel again. He turned, eyes wide.
Mike swallowed dramatically. “You’re not just my friend. Friends? No thanks.” He gave that awkward half-laugh. “Best friends. You’re my best friend, man. My Platonic Superpal. I couldn’t do any of this without you. You’re the most important person in my life.”
Silence. Even the wind seemed to pause in embarrassment.

Summary
Mike Wheeler has spent the last four years of college wandering aimlessly through life. He'd followed Will to California, only for Will Byers, his best, most trusted friend, to slowly phase himself out of his life. And frankly, he'd seemed happier without Mike. What was he supposed to make of that?
But then, Mike discovers some things about himself. He starts to find the pieces that he was looking for. And... what is Will supposed to do with that?
(aka: a post-canon "mike finds his way back to will eventually" 90s college fic, in which will byers gets to scream at mike a lil like he deserves, and mike gets to prove himself in return)
