Shane, of course, is going to present as an alpha. Never mind that both of his parents, who struggled for years to conceive him, are both omegas, meaning that he's genetically predisposed to be the same.
He tells himself that if he wills it into existence, it will simply happen; just like his life-long success in hockey has happened, through willpower and determination.
The thought brings comfort and relief to him as he stands outside of the rink building, overwhelmed by the heat that seems to have taken over his body. He's been getting flashes of it, on and off since his seventeenth birthday, all of which he has ignored.
He can't get overwhelmed, nor can he present here, months early. It would surely be hell, just like it was for Ilya Rozanov.

“You have to relax,” Ilya croons, his hand running up and down Shane’s side.
“I know, I’m trying,” Shane says through gritted teeth.
“Mm, I think the point is to not try. You do not need to try so hard here.”
Those words unexpectedly bring tears to Shane’s eyes. He’s never been told he doesn’t have to try before. He lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding and at the same time, Ilya pushes his finger in, down to the knuckle. The feeling would have knocked the air out of Shane anyway.
“Good?”
“Good,” Shane breathes.
September, Freshman Year. On Bid Day, Ilya takes Shane's virginity.
