Summary
The control Rangi tried to hold herself with had finally stretched thin. Maybe it was just having to sit around so much helplessly. Maybe it was the audacity of this girl to show up out of nowhere and confuse everything. But she had enough. “This is beyond your pride,” she hissed, her arm moving in a blur of a familiar motion. The cold, blue steel of her revolver was pinned against Kyoshi’s chest now.
Whereas any normal person would have jolted or flinched, she stayed eerily still. Unnerving. Is she an idiot? The metallic click of the hammer being drawn back was obscenely loud in the quiet. “You’re a variable I can not control. A mere distraction.”
The accusation hung heavy between them, but fear was the last thing in Kyoshi’s eyes. Fiercely, – stupidly – determined, she was.
“Am I?” she whispered, her own hand rising not to bat the weapon away, but to clasp it, her fingers wrapping around the barrel, holding it fast against her ribcage. “Or are you afraid, Deputy, of having a witness to whatever you become out there?”
