"You don’t have to," he said quietly.
The silence stretched between them, no longer sharp, no longer something she was desperate to fill with distance. It was just there, like an old friend. Familiar. Uncomfortable in the way truth always was.
Finally, Natasha turned her head to look at him again. Really look at him. The tired lines on his face, the pain weighing in his eyes. He truly meant every word.
So she let the fight drain out of her, just enough to say what she really meant. "I don’t want to shut you out," she admitted, her voice softer now. "I just don’t know how to not be angry."
Steve nodded like he understood. Like he’d been waiting for her to say it. "Then be angry." He held her gaze, steady, unwavering. "Just don’t go anywhere."

She lets him pull her close when their nights are too heavy. Lets him kiss her like he is trying to drown out something else. Lets him hold her like he is searching for warmth in this new world he’s in. And when morning comes, when he presses a kiss to her temple and murmurs something soft that she will forget the moment he walks out the door, she pretends she is not waiting for the day he decides to leave for good.
Because Steve Rogers may be here with her now, but she is not the love of his life.
And she certainly is not the home he is searching for still.
