Cas was close, watching him with that quiet, unshakable confidence, and that tiny smirk like he already knew how this would end. Dean sighed, scrubbing a hand down his face. "Damn it."Cas' lips twitched. "So that's a yes?"
Dean groaned. "It's a maybe."
Cas kept looking at him, blue eyes twinkling, and Dean knew. He knew he was already lost. Because Cas was right. Of course, he was. He always was. Dean grumbled something under his breath, shaking his head as he stalked toward his office.
Cas followed, that knowing smile lingering. "I appreciate your open-mindedness, Dean."
Dean pointed a finger at him. "One more expansion idea, and I'm making you work the front desk."
Cas' smirk widened. "I would not be opposed to that."
Dean narrowed his eyes. "I hate you."
Cas chuckled, low and warm. "No, you don't."
Dean turned away, mainly so Cas wouldn't see how his face flushed. Because Cas was right about that, too.
Damn him.

Summary
If they really go back and think about it... it all started with a tree. A Christmas tree, that is. Castiel is human now, and the apocalypse is not only over, it's been averted. Sam's away at NYU, finally finishing law school, and Dean's stuck in what is probably the most awkward situation of his life. He's not exactly sure how he ended up sharing a flat with Cas in Media, Pennsylvania, but he does know the curious would-be angel is sort of derailing his plans for a life of decadence and booze. Cas is trying to make the best of his humanity by exploring human holidays. Dean can't exactly complain because he's pretty much the reason Cas got his wings clipped in the first place.
Dean didn't actually want to fall in love, but how was he supposed to know it would all start with a goddamn tree?
