‘Cyclists are pretty brutal these days,’ Kaoru remarked, glancing in the rearview mirror. ‘Could sweep you right in the air and trample you over. You could’ve gotten yourself killed.’
‘Ideally.’
Kaoru was surprised; not so much at the statement but at the voice: it was rough, deep, jarringly mismatched with the face. ‘Why would you do that?’
The boy sniffled, wiped his nose with the back of his hand. ‘My dog died.’
Kaoru blinked.
‘Well, it’s just a dog. You can get yourself another one.’
For the first time, the boy stared at him. His black eyes were sizzling coals, burning a hole into Kaoru and almost making look away in discomfort. His nostrils flared like a dragon about to roar, faster and faster as his breath started picking up and blood rushed to his cheeks. His lips trembled, sometimes with the impression of a sob, sometimes a laugh. Finally, he slumped against the seat. ‘I don’t have that kind of money,’ he said.

‘Aurelius told me I had to switch rooms because I would be staying with my partner until our next fight,’ Joseph replied, his hazel still a bit wide, mouth a bit slack, ‘He didn’t tell me it was you.’
Antonio’s blood turned to scorching ice, and he realised his breathing had stopped but he didn’t remember when, anger took too much space in his lungs. He shut his eyes for a little longer than a blink. ‘Are you serious?’ he flatly asked, desperately clinging to shreds of hope.
‘Y-yeah.’
Antonio took a big breath and harshly rubbed his fingers over the sides of his nose, his eyebrows, pressed them against his closed eyelids until he saw patterns like Persian rugs. He felt the urge to scream. ‘Okay.’
