Summary
Simon has a dead boy's notebook in his pocket and a live boy's attention on his back. He knows things Jack Merridew needs, and Jack Merridew knows he knows them, and that is enough for both of them.
It is not enough for Simon. Nothing is. But he stays. This is not a story about a boy who didn't know better.
"The Useful Boy" is an explicit, non-consensual Lord of the Flies reimagining from Simon's POV. No redemption.
(BTW I'm just experimenting. Tags reflect the work as a whole. Chapters 1+2 are up; content described in tags will appear across the full fic).

Summary
“We will hunt tonight, and shall have a feast!” boys roared in applause, clapping sandy hands together in excitement. Jacks eyes gleam in amusement, and the strong smile radiates pride. Simon hates how much that look always gave his stomach a twist. Or maybe he hated how much he liked it.

Summary
"He had not cried when he was stripped of his prefectship. He had not cried when he knelt half-naked before the whole school. He had not cried when the strap had cut his back bloody.
But now he cried."
September, 1939. Britain has declared war on Germany, and at Windermere, an old English public school, the boys are told to be brave, obedient, and worthy of their country.
This is slow-burn.
