The one thing that Barkovitch has learned in his life is that he is never going to get what he truly wants so he might as well settle for the next best thing. He bites and snaps just to feel the exhilarating rush when someone takes the bait. McVries is very good to him in that regard—he never hesitates to bite back when Barkovitch snaps his jaws at him. Barkovitch needs that. He can’t have love so hatred is the next best thing. It’s close enough. It’s all he’ll get.

Summary
Pete holds on tight and waits for a sign from the universe that it’s right.
He gets it. He wins a poker tournament that the boys throw while all holed up under a tent, and he wins a couple dollars and one of Barkovitch’s joints. He wins it on pure, unadulterated luck, right from the gods into his lap. Then, as if it weren’t obvious, a second sign. Their next assignment, announced the next morning, takes them back to Da Nang. The second the Major announces it, Pete and Ray look right at each other. Our first time. Pete looks forward again, and begins cooking up a celebration for them, in the same place where it began.

As the other man got up on stage, Collie shook his hand and said something to McVries that Ray couldn’t quite decipher. And Ray couldn’t stop staring at Peter, everything about him calling straight to Garraty in a way that he hadn’t felt before when searching for new artists. Something that made him feel enchanted by the man even before McVries sang in front of everyone.
