Modern AU.
After a life of exploitation and abuse, Bucky escapes and is now on the run from Hydra. He ends up in a small town in upstate New York where he runs into the local Sheriff, Steve Rogers, twice. Not intending to stay and make any sort of footprint, Bucky does end up staying and falling for the Sheriff that has graciously opened his home and his heart to Bucky.

He moved his head to the side and lifted it a bit to be able to see the metal that was holding him down. It was metal cuffs that seemed to open and close by some sort of device, since he could not see anything like a lock or anything on it. He tried to break the cuffs again, but it was futile. He closed his eyes as he remembered that this type of metal cuffs looked distinctly a lot like what HYDRA used on him in the chair.
James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes, World War II vet, ex-assassin and Fist of HYDRA, was currently kidnapped for not the first time in his life, not even the second, and right now he was doubting that he would ever not get kidnapped.

Things change every time It sleeps. It is dog, soldier, the winter soldier, asset. It cannot remember being called anything else, cannot remember what it was like being out from under someone's thumb. Handlers change, grow old, new ones replace them. They retrain It to fit their needs and It lets them. Every time It is put into the cold machine to sleep, It wonders if the next time It wakes, will It have a new handler?
The first thing It sees is blue. Warm blue eyes narrowed like It’s worth something.
