Summary
The weather was hot, too hot. Pope was too hot. His palms were sweating. Not even in a guilty conscience kind of way, just pure and unadulterated dread.
That was, until a small, mouse-like boy caught his eye. He, like Pope, looked out of place, though for completely different reasons. His eyes shifted around the room, not suspicious but scared— or maybe more anticipatory, like he was waiting to be kicked out of the group or yelled at or something. Pope moved over to him carefully, feeling like a predator encroaching prey. The boy's eyes widened a little when he noticed. He couldn't have been older than 25.
"Is this seat taken?" Pope gestured gruffly to the seat next to him. He really did look scared, like a little puppy, maybe, Pope thought absently. He shook his head quickly, moving an old looking, well-read Bible out of the way. Pope just nodded and sat down wordlessly.

Summary
Dennis had always been small. Mom said it was because she’d used up all her energy making three big healthy boys and he was all she had left in her, but realistically it was probably just that he was always fighting for scraps. A runt of the litter, through and through, and even though Dad put him in football to try and toughen him up and have him tousling with the other kids, he was always left shaking near the sidelines after.
Or: Dennis had loved his family, really. His parents had sacrificed so much for him, and he would always be grateful for that. He loved his brothers once, too, but it was hard to look back at them and not remember the baggage of everything that happened.
