Shane and Ilya have been married for four years. They have known each other for sixteen. Their life in Ottawa has the ordinary texture of a long marriage: the reading glasses on the bathroom counter, the ginger ale on the second shelf, the pasta that takes forty-five minutes, the Tuesday yoga that Ilya watches from the kitchen doorway with his coffee and never comments on.

But Shane’s ears are still ringing with the sounds of metal crunching and tires screeching, even if there’s a large blank space in his head where the memory should be. The crash was a blur, a blink. Terribly long and then suddenly over, a heavy silence now descending over the eerie stillness.
