    Rose volunteers for a nonprofit that rescues sex-trafficked omegas, and Shane thinks it's a great cause. He even attends their fundraising galas.

    Then, one night, Rose calls to ask for a favor: She wants Shane to let a recently-rescued male omega live with him. In his apartment.

    His name is Ilya, Rose explains, and the thing is, despite omega hormone levels, he acts and smells just like an alpha. He can't keep staying in an omega group home because he's scaring the other omegas and endangering the staff.

    But he could live with Shane, Rose insists. "You're a big strong alpha hockey player, so he can't intimidate you physically. But also he needs to feel safe, which he can with you, because you're not like other alphas." She pauses. "You know?"

    By which she means Shane has never had a full rut, his scent glands barely work, he can't form a knot, and he has no interest in sticking his dick in anyone. Which, whatever. It's fine.

    But if being a failure as an alpha means he can help this omega, Ilya, who's apparently as much of a biological anomaly as Shane is…

    Shane says yes.

    And maybe it's a stupid decision. But he knows that it's also the right one.

    Hayden keeps mindlessly scrolling Instagram—a pantomime of paying attention, not really taking in anything that’s passing across his screen. Mind racing as a series of realizations wash over him.

    Christ, no wonder Shane was so cagey about Lily. No wonder he didn’t want to introduce her to the guys.

    Hayden would like to believe that everyone would be chill with it, but he could think of at least five guys off the top of his head that would a hundred percent take issue with Shane dating a trans woman. He can imagine, far too easily, the kind of slurs that would get thrown around the locker room if anyone ever found out. Towards Lily, sure, but towards Shane too—because Shane had to be gay, if his girlfriend had a dick, right?

     
    Or, Hayden finds out something that he was never supposed to, and decides that the only thing he can do is show his best friend that he can be the best ally ever, if he just gives him the chance.

    “What the fuck?” Shane breathes, and he knows it’s the wrong thing to say when he sees the hurt flicker through Ilya’s eyes in the dark of his room.
    Ilya falters, just for a second. “Problem, Hollander?”
    “No!” Shane is crossing the room in a second and crawling into bed. (He’s still wearing his pants; he never wears his outside clothes in bed.) Ilya is good at hiding his hurt from Shane, but he’s ‘Hollander’ again, he’s not Shane, he’s not baby, he’s not moya lyubov. He’s on his knees between Ilya’s legs. From here, he can hear everything: the wet sounds of Ilya’s fingers sliding in and out, the rustle of the sheets. His entrance is puffy and swollen, slick with lube. There’s a spot on Shane’s comforter, like Ilya was overzealous with the lube, like he wasn’t sure how much to use on himself.
