    Summary

It's nearly Christmas, and a body is found by the side of the Isis, throat laid open and body mutilated. A crumbling house, a play by Euripides, and the worsening weather all conspire to make this a case that Morse won't soon forget.

Thursday's reaction to Morse's injury is curiously lacking. Or: even DIs make fools of themselves sometimes.

If it could be said that Thursday had closed them, the gates of his heart… then he had thrown them wide open, too.

    Summary

"I care about you." "I think a lot of you."

Such words did not come near it, that fierceness with which he held the man in his heart.

He and Morse were just like those alternating lines of light and shadow playing across the blue hospital blanket: Morse shadow where he was light and light where he was shadow.

Morse was the idealist that he wished he might have had the strength to remain. He was the idealist that he was beyond grateful that he no longer was. He was his protégé and—even though he would never tell him this—he had been his best teacher. He was the reminder of why he had gotten into this, of why he still got up to face those bitter mornings, with the dark and the cold.

“I love you,” is what he would say, if a worn old copper was allowed to tell his equally disagreeable bagman such a thing.

But words like those were not for such men as they.

“You hit your head, Morse.” Max does what he’s been doing all day, all damn day, and forces the image of his blood in the snow out of his mind. “Rather badly, I may add. Just because you aren't currently held in hospital doesn’t mean it isn’t still a serious injury.”
