Nuf watches her intently from the tub, her dark curls accentuating the glow of her bright blue eyes. “What are you doing, HD?”
“Stalling, mostly,” HD admits. She kicks away a fallen scalpel, then blinks at it and picks it up, depositing it on the dirty tools tray. Usually, she’d leave that for someone else to deal with, but today, she disinfects it with an almost clinical precision. This quiet bubble of space that she has with Nuf will shatter the moment they return to the enclosures, and… really, she just doesn’t know if she wants to do that just yet.
What goes on between a researcher and her specimen for study-slash-patient is completely HD and Nuf's business, and HD won't hear anything about it otherwise.

On missions like this, it felt like ghostbusting too. The planet-owner who’d sent them down here hadn’t mentioned just how derelict this region was, all parametric architecture creaking and bending loudly in the silence as dust slowly wore at it. Her torch illuminated a tiny beam of white light that swept over grey metal and abandoned furnishings and finally back down to the puddle at her feet.
Crouching down, Squiddo slid their handheld microscope out of their belt and got to work adjusting the magnification. They didn’t exactly have a degree in astrobiology, but enough work in the field made them pretty good at figuring out what they were looking for — and these vibrating little cells definitely seemed promising.
“Good news, Zam,” she said, the sound of her voice echoing oddly as it hit her helmet and found nothing beyond. “We’ve got some kind of eukaryotes here, and they really like my boots.”
