    The bat found David's other knee. Another wet crack. Another scream. David's guy with a tire iron raised high broke from the crowd. Negan pivoted. Lucille swung in a short arc and caught him across the face. The barbed wire tore through skin and the guy went down hard, tire iron clattering across concrete.

    Negan stood over him.

    "Rule three. You don't interrupt me when I'm talking." He smiled. Wide and bright and absolutely feral. "Consider me your daddy now. And daddy don't like interruptions."

    Jesus Christ, did I just say that out loud?

    The apocalypse was definitely making him fucking weird...But it worked, he could see it on their faces. People wanted someone in charge who wasn't David. Even if that someone talked to a baseball bat and made daddy jokes.
    Simon was still holding his gun on the remaining crew members.

    "I'll workshop the rest."
    Then he brought Lucille down once. Twice. Three times. David's skull caved in with a sound different from the bikers. The body twitched once and went still.

    Negan straightened and Lucille dripped red.
    "Any questions?"

    "I'm too stable." Denny grinned anyway. "Basically I'm so charming and handsome that my body's holding together out of sheer force of personality. UNOS doesn't know what to do with me."

    Her lips twitched. "That's not how transplant lists work."

    "You sure? Because that's exactly what Burke said. I wrote it down and everything."

    "You're full of shit."

    "Maybe." He put the coffee down on the table beside him. "But it's true. I'm too healthy to be a priority. Which is good, I guess. Means I'm not actively dying."

    A nurse slapped a clamp into Miller's hand. He worked fast to get control while O'Malley stood there with his hands up, blood dripping off his gloves.
    Alex laughed. "License to kill."

    Someone picked it up. "Double-O-Seven."

    The redhead next to him pressed her lips together. A snort escaped anyway.

    "That's mean," she said. But there were dimples.

    "It's accurate." Alex turned toward her, leaning his shoulder against the wall. Up close she was even better. Freckles across her nose, full lips, eyes that really were that green. "I'm Alex."

    She glanced at him. One eyebrow up. "Good for you."

    "You gonna give me your name?"

    "I'm gonna keep watching the surgery."

    "Come on. I'm trying here."

    "That's your effort?" She looked at him fully now. "Weak."
