    Summary

It's been years since Doctor Ryland Grace saved Erid and Earth. He is content with his life, happy just to teach the next generation of Eridians and have the occasional game night with Rocky and Adrian in his dome. For the most part, nothing changes.

And that's the problem. Shouldn't Grace, y'know...age? When Rocky indicates that he should be sixty human years old by now, Grace can't reconcile the young face in the mirror with the time that his friend has religiously kept.

Things get more complicated when another undoubtedly human ship shows up at the edge of the 40 Eridani system. Suddenly Grace is playing ambassador between the two species, and tensions are rising between them. Will this be a successful second contact, or is the peaceful life Grace just wants to live too much to ask for?

“Grace,” she says gently. “You should really play it.”

I don’t take my eyes off the light. “Are…are we sure it’s real?” I whisper.

She barks out her boisterous laugh. “I am absolutely the wrong person to ask,” she says.

When Grace goes back for Rocky, all he finds is a dead and silent ship. Being the only one left to bring Taumoeba to Erid, he decides to brave the long trip alone. He's not the same man when he arrives at Erid, but an unexpected friendship might bring him back to sanity.

    Summary

Stars danced across his vision, blurred and smudged like wet paint, broken glasses pressed uncomfortably against his face. He tried to gasp for air, but it was like his lungs just couldn’t inflate. He was winded, he vaguely understood, but he couldn’t think straight past the panic that pumped through his veins.

Every attempt at breath felt like knives in his body, electricity shooting across his clavicle, pinpricks scattered his face, lightning down his spine. His body had never felt heavier, like the atmosphere had gotten denser, his limbs chained down.

Flame burned in the distance, catching the corner of his vision. That couldn’t be good.

or; Grace was just a little bit closer to the explosion at the space facility and ruins Stratt's backup plan.

It was supposed to be a normal day on the Vat.

But then Stratt entered his lab with proof that sentient aliens existed, and were trying to communicate with humans.

Oh, and they specifically wanted to speak with him.

He needed more candy if he was going to make it through this.

Rocky remembers meeting a leaky space blob who helped save the stars. Said space blob does not remember him. For now. Rocky will fix.

    Summary

Every screen in the room blazed with the same breaking news feed. An alien voice had just asked for him by name on live television.

“Mr. Grace?” little Jamal whispered from the front row, eyes huge behind his glasses. “Is that really you they’re talking about? Like, you you?”

Ryland’s mouth opened, but nothing came out. His heart slammed against his ribs like it wanted to escape and hide under the desk with the class hamster. He was just Mr. Grace. The guy who drew cartoon planets on the board, who stayed late helping kids glue together messy dioramas of the solar system, who once spent an entire lunch period comforting a sobbing girl because her goldfish had “gone to the great fishbowl in the sky.” He graded spelling tests on vocabulary words like photosynthesis and asteroid. Aliens did not know his name. Aliens did not ask for science teachers.

The marker slipped from his fingers and clattered to the floor.
