When Alex doesn’t say anything, Henry reaches out across the table to tentatively wrap his elegantly long fingers around Alex’s hand. His thumb is resting on the knob of Alex’s wrist, and he swipes this thumb over the skin, almost absentmindedly. Alex can’t think of anything else, revelling in the feeling of Henry touching him again.
“Love,” Henry starts, voice sincere. “I have never needed space from you. I needed space from some… emotions I was feeling, and I’m so sorry I didn’t stop to think about how that would make you feel. Truly, it was nothing to do with you, I promise. If I haven’t thrown our friendship out of the window, I would want nothing more than to go back to how things were before. I mean it.”

Summary
Henry hates New Year’s Eve.
To him, it’s just another excuse to throw a party and to get absolutely sozzled on whatever alcoholic drink happens to be handy. Or a shoddy reason to choose some empty resolution for the new year and often used as an opportunity to kiss a truly horrid amount of people.
While Henry is not morally opposed to kissing strangers or having a tipple or two–he does hazily remember his Oxford days–it’s simply not his cup of tea any longer. He’s grown and matured as a person. In other words, he’d much rather curl up on his sofa, Earl Grey in a mug beside him, Bake Off on the telly and his dog David at his feet than subject himself to a loud party or a rowdy crowd.
And if Henry is being honest, kissing strangers no longer holds any appeal. Not since he met Alex.
OR Henry hates New Year's Eve, until he doesn't.

Henry clicks his tongue, lifting his own mug to his mouth before replying, “I will neither confirm nor deny that.”
“Oh my God,” Alex says with a laugh, something warm and strange bubbling beneath his sternum. “You’re actually sabotaging me.”
Henry smiles, and that heat burns hotter in Alex's chest. “Just some friendly competition between coworkers.”
Alex stands and walks over to Henry's desk, thrilled at the way that Henry’s eyes follow him with every step. He plants his palms on the dark wood and leans in until his face is only an inch from Henry's. Henry’s lips part on a soft gasp, and Alex can’t help it—his gaze dips down to Henry’s mouth before darting back up to his eyes.
He can’t get distracted by his attraction here.
There are bigger games at play.
He'll just file the view of soft lips away for later, when he's alone in his apartment and can think about the way Henry’s mouth would look on his skin in peace.
For now, he only smirks. “You're fucking on, Fox.”

Summary
He puts his skewer down and grabs at it with both hands, tentatively bringing it closer to his mouth. He looks at Alex and again at the s’more and he finally bites into it, tearing it in half.
“Mmm, goodness gracious,” he moans as he finally tastes the treat. “It’s so sweet”.
“Well, it is an American thing,” Alex says, as he lets out a laugh.
There’s a glint of joy in Henry's eyes as he finishes the second half.
A splotch of melted chocolate rests at the corner of his mouth, threatening to run downwards and Alex tries to warn him but at the same time, like he’s guided by a force he cannot fight against, he extends his hand and gathers the chocolate with his thumb.
“You had some—” and shows Henry his thumb full of chocolate. “Yeah, that’s better,” Alex adds, as he sticks his thumb in his mouth and sucks it clean.
Or: Stuck in a cabin due to a storm, Alex and Henry only have marshmallows, crackers and chocolate as supplies. They make the best of it, while also tending to some old wounds.

(Twenty years ago, Henry met—and let go of—his soulmate. Now he's in his 40s, with a new job in a new city, and certainly not expecting said soulmate to come barreling into his life again. A small white lie seems like the simplest way to keep things from getting awkward, but real life has a way of getting complicated.)

It’s Henry's blanket.
The one Alex would sometimes find him wrapped in, bundled up on the couch, with a steeping mug of tea on the coffee table and a book in his hands.
Or other times, Alex would find a lump of a human, barely visible in his own bed, drapes drawn closed and no signs of Henry having eaten that day. That’s when he’d slip under the blanket too, pulling Henry’s body close to his, not saying anything with words but everything with a kiss placed on the temple.
If Henry leaves, he’ll probably take this blanket with him, Alex thinks, trying to wrap himself even tighter with the material.
Or: Alex overhears a conversation between Henry and Bea and realizes there's a lot more things that he feels for his roommate.
