Summary
They had three chairs up at the countertop.
If he sits in the second one, something bad will happen. Everyone will die. The house will explode. You can warn him. He has to sit in the first one or the third one. If not, everyone you love will die and it will all be your fault.
Ilya moved to sit in the second chair. Shane bristled, hands trembling.
“Don’t.” Shane snapped. Ilya froze, glancing at Shane with a concerned and confused expression. Shane inhaled, then exhaled. Guilt crawled up his throat. He was being fucking insane.
Still though, what if he wasn’t being insane? What if there was a 0.1% something bad would happen to Ilya?

Yuna had made checklists and organized budgets and shook coaches’ hands and learned how to negotiate and delegate and advocate, all in service of protecting and preserving Shane and this precious, enormous gift. There were a million ways for his journey to go wrong, and only one way for it to go right. She was competent, she was capable, she’d done everything right, everything by the book — and twenty years later, she feels like she didn’t rise to the moments that truly mattered. She mentored the career, at times, she did not mother the boy.
And yet Shane, a marvelous miracle all his own, had figured out those lessons anyways.

The coffee maker had beeped from the kitchen- Hollander, I am a guest, yes? I should enjoy coffee in bed - and Shane groaned, rising from the bed and sliding his discarded briefs up his legs- fine, you can be a guest for this week- trotting out of the bedroom and returning minutes later with a mug in each hand, handing one to Ilya, not bothering to hide a smile.“World’s Okayest Hockey Player,” Ilya read, a frown deepening on his face, “why are you giving me this? This is yours.”
“I’ve never used it, so it can be your mug now.”
Ilya had nodded slowly, setting the offending object on the bedside table carefully, eyes flashing as he watched Shane do the same- okay, Hollander- before pouncing on him, pressing him into the mattress.
