Summary
The Metkayina teenagers are tired of hearing the same complaint from their parents: they spend too much time swimming, racing ilu, and playing in the reefs. So the adults come up with a solution. This year, they will all participate in the annual play retelling the story of Payakan.
The roles are decided by anonymous vote.
Aonung, son of the olo’eyktan, is chosen as the Sea God.
Neteyam, son of Toruk Makto, is chosen as the Sea Goddess, the Sea God’s lover.
Now the two boys who can barely tolerate each other must rehearse together, perform together, and play lovers in front of the entire clan.
What begins as arguments and teasing slowly becomes something neither of them expected. And when the final scene of the play arrives, the kiss is supposed to be part of the story.
Neither of them expected it to feel real.
