"She’s yours," the corrupt man sneered again, waving his hand dismissively toward the girl. "I’ve already been paid in full. Take her and be gone."
Kafka did not respond right away. Instead, she stepped forward, her heel clicking softly against the floor as she approached the girl. With the same slow, deliberate motion, she knelt down beside her, eyes never leaving the girl’s furious amber gaze.
“You’re not an animal,” Kafka’s voice was soft, almost a whisper, but it carried the weight of something much darker. “But if you want to live like one, I can certainly help with that.”
Kafka stood again, her gaze never straying from the girl. "I’ll make you something more than this," she murmured, almost to herself, but loud enough for the girl to hear. Her smile was faint but dangerous, like a blade concealed behind silk.
“We’ll take her. And we’ll make sure you get your payment.”
