    “We could…be friends, maybe.” Shane’s voice was small, hesitant on almost every sound.

    “Wha–” Ilya’s reply was less of a word and more of a stupid, confused noise like he’d been punched. That probably would’ve caught him less off guard than what Shane actually said.

    “Y’know, text about the hockey gossip? You call, I answer? Friends.”

    Something terrifyingly bright exploded into Ilya’s chest. Something dangerous, that felt like maybe it could keep him warm through the summer in Russia, through the chill that permeated his childhood home no matter how warm it was outside.

    “And also we like to suck each other’s dicks,” he quipped, trying to deflect.

    “Fuck off, Rozanov.”

    Drunk and young and stupid, Shane and Ilya choose to be honest - just a little bit. To lean into each other, instead of apart. What happens if they choose to be a little bit brave on a Vegas rooftop in 2010, and keep choosing it?

    “I want you in my hotel room tonight,” Ilya says, satisfied when Hollander’s pupils dilate in response. “I want to take you apart, slowly. Until you’re begging for it.” 

    “Fuck off, asshole,” Hollander breathes out, but the look in his eyes says yes and more please. “You can’t just come back here and–” 

    Just as Ilya is about to lean down and kiss the next words out of Hollander’s mouth, a buzzing sound startles them both. He glances down to see Hollander’s phone vibrating on the countertop with a text notification from someone named Matty.

    In an alternate timeline, Shane resolves to move on after Sochi. When he and Ilya reunite for the MLH Awards in Vegas, Ilya takes the news of Shane's new "friend" about as well as you'd expect.
