“ He grabbed his suit jacket from the chair and wore it; he was dressed properly, a custom-tailored three-piece he had no problem buying; he looked over himself in the tall mirror near the door, adjusted his tie — it fit him perfectly. These days, there was a strong need to convey wealth for all nations to see. America lacked nothing and could afford anything, that was the message, much better sent than Russia's.”
Cold War era, violent tension, chess match, sharp and pointy Alfred, detached and composed Ivan. Cool writing for a chess match, liked the ending 👍

A Study in Acclimation (Luke 15:32) - Matthew likes to take things slow, watching and waiting as the world passes him by. As war continually breaks out around him, he’s left wondering if a world where his family can coexist is even possible.
Genesis 4:11 - In 1812, the United States of America declares its first-ever "real" war. It just so happens that the war is against Alfred's father and brother.
A Study in Separation (Proverbs 17:9) - The Union of the United States dissolves. Canada takes the first steps towards independence. The United Kingdom struggles with peace. France attempts a new empire. Alfred, Matthew, Arthur, and Francis have a transformative time in the 1860s.

Experimental writing style; repetition, metaphors, history of America thru Russia's eyes. Interesting and poignant.
