For someone who has to fend for himself and survive alone for most of his life, Knuckles never truly knew what gentle affection meant or how it felt like. He knew what it was like to get punched, kicked, slapped, and anything that was hard and rough to his body. But gentle, soft, inoffensive touching is completely foreign to him. He had lost all trace of time. Minutes melting to hours, swirling together as if one with the wind. He still had not found peace.
He could not get her face out of his mind. The pursed lips, the furrowed brow, the anger, the disappointment in her eyes. That was the worst part. Disappointment.
A sharp gust of wind pulled him from his thoughts. He suddenly shivered as he felt the cold cut his skin. He had experienced cold. He had survived in cold. But this cold felt deeper, more biting than it ever had before. He pulled his arms around his body, suddenly regretting not bringing anything warm. In his haste to escape his shame he had not felt the cold. Now he could feel it deeply, penetrating to his bones. He had to find shelter.
He slowly willed himself to stand, suddenly feeling a deep exhaustion. Tired of running. Tired of failure. He took a deep breath, the cold wind burning his lungs.
He put one foot in front of the other. And without knowing where he was going, he walked.

“Tails! Watch out for the mountain!”
The fox squinted and tried to see past the swarm that was crowding around him. He immediately went to steer the plane away but couldn’t. He felt his body tense before it started to spasm and then the pain of electricity hit him.
One of the badniks electrocuted the Tornado and by extension the fox seated in the pilot seat.
Tails wasn’t aware of his loud, pained screech that echoed out of the plane as it shut down entirely and continued on its path towards the mountain. But he did hear the loud panicked calls of his name from both Sonic and Knuckles.
