He nodded and turned toward the kitchen. And there it was. The old sadness. The old dread. Because this was when the dream ended. It had always ended here. Still, he called, “Shane?”
His voice sounded strange in the hallway. Too quiet. Too careful. For one terrible second, nothing happened. Then there was a soft sound from the kitchen. A drawer closing. Footsteps.
Ilya’s entire body locked. The dream would fade now. The walls would blur. His mother would disappear. He would wake up in bed, heart aching, Shane warm beside him and unreachable in the way the living could be when you were grieving the dead.
But the dream did not fade.
The footsteps came closer. The golden light stayed. Irina stayed. Ilya’s pulse thundered in his ears. And then Shane turned the corner. Ilya forgot every thought he had ever had.

Ilya's dream always ends before his mother gets to meet Shane. Except today.
