Summary
Yusuf is standing on the bow, hands resting on the railing. The moonlight reflects in the water, and it reminds Yusuf of Nicolò’s eyes. But then again, everything is reminding him of Nicolò these days.
He grimaces.
Nicolò is technically in Yusuf’s employ, as Yusuf hired the caravel and its crew to cross the Mediterranean swiftly and safely. And as such, Yusuf should not be thinking of keeping Nicolò from his duties sailing the ship in favour of setting some other task for the handsome first mate.
***
Can Yusuf seduce the handsome sailor working for him without, you know, seducing him?

Summary
It's not Nicky, really, it’s not. Nicky is a gentleman, supportive, kind. He goes with Joe to Joe’s favourite falafel truck, eating on a bench in the park, when Joe takes him on a date. He doesn’t mind going to the museum on the first Tuesday of the month, because it is free admission, even though he could probably rent the museum out for the day if he wanted to. He stays in and watches Netflix with Joe when rent is due and commission payments are late. And he genuinely admires Joe’s art. He looks at everything Joe makes thoughtfully and carefully, even the doodles on his grocery list, and he always offers some insightful praise. And sure, he did offer to contact some gallery owners on Joe’s behalf, but when Joe said he wanted to make it on its own, he accepted that without a fuss, hugging Joe and telling him he didn’t doubt for a second someone with Joe’s talent would do just that.
So Nicky is awesome. Nicky is amazing. Nicky is perfect, and their relationship would be perfect too, except that Nicky has to go to all these fancy receptions and fundraisers and galas and events, and Joe – Joe doesn’t really belong on those.

Poor artist Joe really does not belong in rich socialite Nicky's world, does he?

Summary
Nicolò was caressing him so tenderly, kissing his skin so softly, treating him so reverently, that Yusuf wanted to scream. He hated it when Nicolò was acting so – so loving. Because it was only showing Yusuf what he was missing.
Nicolò didn't love Yusuf. Yusuf knew this for a fact, because Nicolò never answered when Yusuf said I love you. He never gave Yusuf a compliment, even though Yusuf went out of his way to praise Nicolò. Yusuf called Nicolò hayati and ya amar and ya rouhi and ya albi all the time. Nicolò knew enough Arabic to understand the words, and yet all Nicolò ever said was ‘Yusuf’ in his soft, halting voice. Yusuf recited poetry for Nicolò – poetry both by his own hand and by the greatest poets – and Nicolò listened carefully, and smiled his barely there smile, but he never responded in kind.
So it was clear that Nicolò didn’t love Yusuf.
And it hurt Yusuf more than he could ever have imagined, to love somebody with every cell in his body and not have that love returned.
