It happens on a random morning in May when Alex, age fourteen, pads into the kitchen to greet his mother and steal a waffle from June's plate and sees a man sitting at their breakfast counter, reading a newspaper, a cup of coffee raised to his lips. Like he belongs. Like it's the most natural thing in the world. June doesn't seem to give the man a second thought. She merely flicks Alex on the forehead and takes back the waffle. Ellen isn't worrying, either. In fact, she's talking to him. Asking what his schedule is like. Making plans for dinner.
Alex has never seen this man before in his life.

Alex wants to say, God I love your weird and brilliant brain, but sometimes seeing Henry this open and unguarded makes him feel like he might accidentally drop and break something, so instead he just runs his palm up Henry’s leg, stopping above his knee.
“You know what? I think you might be right about that.”
And Henry — smart, gorgeous, mesmerizing Henry who most likely will never cease to surprise and amaze Alex — just reaches over to lace their fingers together in a way that makes Alex think he knows, somehow.

Time buckles under the influence and the seconds pass achingly slow, allowing him to chronicle every glorious detail.

He spots Henry easily – a tall lighthouse of tousled blond hair – talking to a girl who is clearly into him. His expression looks perfectly polite, but he’s subtly leaning away, and he looks tense.
So, Alex makes an impulsive decision.

Or: Alex is so very definitely straight, so pretending to be Henry’s boyfriend to get him out of an awkward situation should just be a fun little pastime - except that he doesn't really want to stop, and he has no idea why.
