Summary
A linked sequence of vignettes set between 1768 and 1779, following Lord John Grey, Manoke, and William through the years when Mount Josiah becomes their refuge. It explores grief, desire, fatherhood, trust, restraint, and the private intimacies by which a wounded man learns how to survive.
***
After Isobel’s death, Lord John Grey comes to Virginia carrying too many ghosts: a dead wife he loved imperfectly, a son who is and is not his, and a life spent surviving behind polished manners and necessary lies.
In Richmond, he finds Manoke again—older, wary, betrayed by the empire that used him and mistrusted by some of the people he tried to protect. John offers him shelter at Mount Josiah, a remote place where no one knows his face.
Manoke does not stay—not always, not as John might wish—but he returns. Over the years, he becomes the one harbour the Englishman can neither command nor keep. With him, John is made to answer for the truths he has hidden even from himself: Isobel, William, Jamie Fraser, grief, fear, shame, and love.
