“They told me you were dead,” you said finally, voice catching.
He paused.
“I know,” he said.
All at once, you were blinded by white hot fury as tears blurred your vision.
“No, I don’t think you do,” you replied, still shaking your head. “Two fucking years, Simon. I thought you were dead this whole time.”
He didn’t reply, just kept staring back at you.
“In a fucking ditch somewhere,” you said with a humorless laugh. “That’s what they said. Shot like a dog and left to rot.”
The silence between the two of you stretched on for what felt like years, and all at once the rage that had snatched you disappeared. You saw rather than felt your hand reach up as if to touch his face, but caught yourself at the last minute and pulled it back down to your side.
