Summary
The present is uncertain; what is present will become the past. This body’s actions have been proved uncertain, as well, for it has been claimed to the present by a living person, when it only should have belonged to the past.
Yet this living person has traces on him; unwanted traces placed by others, sticking on his uniform and body, forced to linger by virtue of being a Major, and his commander.
The dead notice one such trace on Eberhard. It is one that makes Charon want to replace with himself.

Summary
The purpose of a vessel is to contain something; memories, reminisces, thoughts- both wanted and unwanted.
Charon exists to honor Paul's legacy, and that includes trying to be him for someone that Paul once longed for. Yet like all imitations, it is subpar, inefficient, and will never be close to the original.
It will never be close enough for Eberhard.

Summary
Trying to keep an entire battalion alive is already hard enough as it is, but the way Eberhard tried to keep a poppy of Charon's alive for weeks leads to something unthinkable for 'the dead', as he always says.
It's certainly unthinkable to imagine Charon being drunk.
