Summary
Lindsey chuckled and took the opportunity to curl her little finger around Steve’s. She leaned across the table and like a magnet to iron, Steve turned toward her. “Steve,” she began, her voice low and sincere, “Bucky wanted to surprise you.” She shrugged elegantly. “And I wanted to help.”
Neither moved. Bucky dragged a hand through his hair nervously, trying to decipher Steve’s thoughts from the hints he saw flickering across his face. This was so not going according to plan.
Finally, Lindsey began pulling away. “But if you’re not interested, then I’ll - “
Steve tightened his finger around hers, effectively holding her in place. “Who says - “ He stopped to clear the sand from his throat. “Who says I’m not interested?”
Bucky blew out a breath he’d not been aware he was holding as Lindsey’s relieved smile lit up her eyes.

Summary
This was what tended to scare Shane the most, when Ilya was unwell: the gradual loss of him, despite being physically there. He would go quiet, blank, slow to speak and slow to respond, nothing like the pulse of intense energy and liveliness that sparked in him at his baseline. Shane missed him, when he was away in that place. It was not a place Ilya could always describe, and it was not somewhere Shane could rescue him from, or even join him in for company. So Shane waited, every time, for him to come back. He always came back. That was the only relief in it.

Steve wakes up with Bucky sprawled out next to him. He knows he has to be quiet; Bucky is a very light sleeper. Both of them are. It’s a necessity and an inevitability when you’ve lived through several wars, but right now, it’s mostly annoying. Steve just wants to surprise Bucky for once, but the odds of him succeeding are close to zero. That doesn’t mean he won’t try.
