Sherlock smiled, and William drew his hand a little closer until Sherlock almost had to take a step forward. He did it without resisting. After the past few weeks, he had no reason to pull away from any movement that brought him nearer to William. His free hand lifted to William’s sleeve, found only fabric there, warm from him, and stayed.
William’s gaze rested on him, calm, attentive, with that fine seriousness that made evasion difficult for Sherlock.
„And that’s why you climbed through my window. Because you wanted to remind me that my breakfast egg nearly wiped you from the face of the earth.“
„Among other things.“

“You are being very careful,” William said.
Sherlock was silent for a moment. “Yes.”
“That is rare for you.”
“That is probably true.”
William opened his eyes again. “Why?”
Sherlock’s fingers loosened almost imperceptibly against his arm. William heard him breathe in, longer than necessary, as though the answer might arrange itself properly if given enough air.
“Because I want you,” Sherlock said at last. “And because there is nothing in this world about which I have less interest in being wrong.”

“You or me?” Sherlock asked.
“You,” William said, smiling. “Hand me the oil.”
Sherlock let go immediately and lunged for the drawer, rummaging with single-minded urgency. William leaned over his shoulder to watch.
“So,” William remarked, spotting a photograph tucked inside, “you do have a picture of me.”
“Hah?” Sherlock turned his head and kissed him. “Who said I didn’t?”
“There were none on your murder wall.”
“Different category.”
“I know, Sherly. I’m not dense. Why is this one in here?”
Sherlock didn’t answer. He didn’t have to. Understanding settled, and William flopped back onto the bed, hands raised.
“What a filthy mind you have, detective.”
“What excellent material I work with.” -

Sherlock leaned over him slightly and pressed a kiss to William’s cheek. “I know… I do too.” He felt William’s perpetually cold fingers against his face, felt the gentle stroking, and leaned into the touch. “And if we’re very quiet? And I lie on my back like a starfish?”
“The latter is nothing but sheer laziness, Professor.”
“By no means, Detective.” He paused, then conceded, “All right. Perhaps a little.” His fingers were still at Sherlock’s cheeks, tracing slow, soothing circles. He turned his head and pressed a kiss into Sherlock’s palm. “There are stains you really don’t want to explain.”
“Then climb out another window and steal us a towel.”
“Certainly. And if I’m caught, I’ll simply explain to your brother that I engage in compulsive theft to keep my mind sharp.”

Sherlock wasn't sure how many times he read and reread the letter. Wasn't sure how many tears staining the paper were Williams or his own. Wasn't sure at what point he dropped the cigarette he didn't even remember lighting onto the floor. He would have clutched onto the paper, but he primally feared ripping the precious, oh so precious words that he tried desperately to engrave into his memory. Eventually he found his voice through the sobs that racked his body, “I felt the same,” He said it more to the air than to himself, wishing that a familiar noble filled that empty space, “This whole time, I felt the same way about you!”
It didn’t have to be this way, he thought desperately to himself. He would make sure of it. He would save the man he cherished above all else, no matter if he didn't want to be saved.

What if Billy only found William, and Sherlock spent three years thinking the only man who had understood him had died in his arms?
