Summary
“'Wait,' Matthias blurted, as she reached for the hem of her knitted vest. 'Wait.' He crossed the room and stood in front of her as she turned to face him - reaching out, he gently touched his fingers to her hands where they had paused above her waist. 'Let me help,' he said."
A missing moment from Crooked Kingdom, Chapter 16: Matthias helps Nina get changed for the Sweet Reef mission and Nina teaches Matthias more about kissing.

Summary
"Nina gently smiled and said, 'What about the whaling hut?'
'You slept very peacefully then also. I do not often get to see you so still.' Matthias gazed at her fondly before returning his attention to his fingers combing through her hair. Nina could tell there was more on his mind, so she waited; finally, he took a deep breath and said, 'It was simpler then in many ways.'"A missing moment from Crooked Kingdom Chapter 30: Matthias and Nina talk about fear in the suite at the Geldrenner.

Summary
"'Let’s see,' she continued, 'neither of us are in chains, the ship is still afloat, and we’re not on our way to commit any unprecedented crimes, so I’d say this is our most successful ocean voyage so far.'
Nina expected a laugh, or, at the very least, a detailed list of the things she’d left out of the story, but Matthias only chuckled quietly and continued staring out at the horizon. She tilted her head up to look at him. He had a strange set to his face, Nina realized; he looked resigned to something, ready to fight."
On the way to Ravka after the events of Crooked Kingdom, Matthias prepares himself to face his past (and Nina reminds him that he's not on his own).

"She pulled back from their embrace to look in Matthias’s eyes, placing her hands on either side of his face as if she could hold him there forever. 'I saw you die,' she breathed out, without fully thinking about it."
Nina has a bad dream on the way to Ravka.

Summary
Shane is made to be worshiped; he's a luxury. He’s perfect. A bona fide godsend. He shouldn’t have to deal with this. He shouldn’t have to lose sleep putting the pieces of him back together in the middle of the night. He deserves better than him; of course, he does. He deserves the world.
Ilya needs to make it worth it. He needs to remind him what Shane was so captivated by in the early phase of their relationship. Shane fell in love with the flirtatious, bold, confident athlete who could make Shane swoon with a single kiss. Not this burdensome, troubled crybaby who had become, to his great humiliation, emotionally dependent on Shane.
Make it worth it, Ilya tells himself.
~
(Takes place after the events of 'The Long Game')
Ilya has a nightmare. Shane helps calm him down and soothes some fears that have been plaguing him at the same time.

Summary
“I mean, you— you say I’m perfect. That it’s, that everything we do together is… is perfect.”
“Yes, perfect,” Ilya says adamantly.
“Okay. But. I mean. I like feedback, you know. If there are things you haven’t said because you don’t want to hurt my feelings, you could say. If there’s any judgement of my technique, like, that you’ve been doing silently in your head.”
“I never judge you silently,” Ilya says. He pulls back a bit, twisting his neck so he can look Shane in the eye, frowning. “I judge you loudly. Is no fun if I don’t see your reaction.”
“Ha, ha.”
“Shane,” Ilya says. “Is this real worry you are having? I must know. You think I have… criticism of you, of sex with you? You think it is not perfect for me?”
---
Shane and Ilya navigate their sexual relationship, now that they're finally a couple.

Summary
Yuna Hollander knows that it is normal for children to distance themselves from their parents as they approach adulthood. She expected it when Shane was a teenager, when he moved to Kingston for juniors, even later, when he moved to Montreal. When they stayed close, when he seemed happy to see them at his games, to have her managing his career, when he seemed not only to love them, but to still like having them around… When he invited her for dinner with his boyfriend and the four of them laughed until the summer sun dropped below the lake, she thought maybe this was one challenge of parenthood she would be spared. Which makes the day it finally happens all the harder to bear.
Or, Yuna Hollander and the joy and anguish of growing up.

Summary
"Rozanov?" he says, almost without meaning to. Surely he's mistaken and is about to be told to fuck off. Or, even more alarmingly, he is correct, and then he is certain to be told to fuck off, and possibly punched in the face. The man shifts, eyes drifting from his drink up to Scott and— well, there's no denying it. The captain of the Boston Raiders is drunk in Scott's neighborhood dive bar.
"Fuck," the response is slow, the delayed reaction of molasses spilling out of a jar carelessly knocked over on the kitchen counter. "I must have overdone it. I have summoned the Ghost of Hockey Past."
Scott could just leave. He could turn on a heel, and leave this drunk asshole to discover on his own what consequences are.
Because he's stupid, though, because he's nothing if not a responsible captain even when the drunken idiot in question isn't even one of his own teammates, and yes, because a small part of him can't help but love a good train wreck when he sees one, he sits down instead.
__
Or, Scott Hunter runs into Ilya Rozanov sometime around midnight after a game, and the two saddest, loneliest, most closeted hockey players in New York end up sharing more than they mean to.Bookmarked by SecretUndercoverAnonymous

Summary
"What are you doing here?"
Ilya looks at him. Shane has not moved from the doorway. He has one hand still on the frame.
"I don't know," Ilya says, which is the truest thing he has said in months.
Shane makes a sound that isn't quite a laugh. "That's not—" He stops. Runs a hand over his face. "You can't be here, Ilya."
The name. Again. Said almost like an accident.
"Why are you here?" he asks instead of responding to that.
Shane goes still.
"This isn't your place," Ilya says. Carefully. "I mean, you don’t live here. You live somewhere else, a real one, nicer, bigger, or I don’t know because I have never been to it. So why are you in the fuck building at four in the morning?"
Shane's jaw tightens. For a second Ilya thinks he won't answer, that he will turn and go back inside and this will be just another door between them and then Shane says, low and bitten-off: "I come here sometimes."
"Why?"
"You know why."
Or, After Shane leaves Ilya in Boston, Ilya becomes a mess and Shane thinks he's ruined everything. They both seek each other silently until they cross paths again. Eventually, someone has to say something.
