Joel didn’t really care about the newcomers, to be perfectly honest.
Whenever someone new arrived in Jackson, it was always a big deal for a week. Chatter and talk and baked goods delivered before the shine of intrigue rusted and everyone went back to their business. Back to their happy, idyllic little lives in the toy town they all inhabited. Playing a dime-store society liable to collapse the day they dug up the wrong root.
The only difference between these newcomers and the ones they usually got was the age. The girl, a ratty, brown-eyed fifteen-year-old, had been picked up with her light-haired, blue-eyed dad by a patrol out near the old copper mine, and given immediate refuge because ‘youth was sacred’, the kind of sappy, stupid saying Jackson thrived on.𓆝 𓆟 𓆞 𓆝 𓆟
David and Ellie take up residence in Jackson. Joel tries his best to help.

“Ellie Miller, pick up the fucking radio,” Joel says dangerously. “Over.”
Her hand reaches out automatically in response to The Voice. She can feel his anger rolling off the radio in thick waves, but she dimly registers that he gave her his last name. She never corrects people who call her that, and she sometimes writes it on tests and homework, but Joel’s never flat out said it before. Ellie nervously presses the push-to-talk button.
“I’m here,” she says into the radio. Over, Jesse mouths at her. “Over.”
“Get your ass back to Jackson, now. You will not follow the buck. You will go home quickly and quietly. I want stealth and speed. Is that clear? Over.”
Well, that’s fucking ominous.
(Or: An alternate version of Reckless, still featuring Ellie and Jesse sneaking out to go hunting and shit hitting the fan.)

Ellie nods jerkily. Marlene squeezes her knee with an intense expression.
“You get there, and you make it happen. No matter the cost.”
“Okay,” Ellie agrees wetly.
“You do not let anything stop you,” Marlene stresses.
“Make it right,” she tells Ellie.
OR: Marlene gets Ellie out of Boston without Joel. They find each other in Kansas City anyway.
